SUBJECT LINE: A cheap and effective way to reduce maternal mortality in developing countries

Dear INSERT M.P. NAME

Like most people in this country, I believe that

  • Black lives matter

  • Maternal mortality destroys communities, families and children’s prospects.

I recently found out that each year over 50,000 mothers bleed to death after giving birth. Dying in this way (known as postpartum haemorrhage or PPH) is rare in wealthy countries but is much more common in low- and middle-income countries. Most of the victims are women of colour.

Tranexamic acid is the only treatment proven to reduce death from PPH. It has no serious side effects and is widely used to reduce menstrual bleeding and bleeding after tooth extractions.

Making tranexamic acid available to all women with PPH could save tens of thousands of lives every year. A single injection of tranexamic acid, given soon after birth, reduces deaths from bleeding by a third. If widely implemented, tranexamic acid could slash deaths from PPH.

These results were shown in the WOMAN trial, coordinated by The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. The WOMAN Trial was a huge global project which included over 20,000 women from 21 countries and was funded by the UK Department of Health, The Wellcome Trust and the Gates Foundation.

The WHO has endorsed the results and included tranexamic acid in PPH treatment guidelines but this is not enough to ensure that women benefit. Many health ministries around the world are not aware of the results and tranexamic acid is not available in many hospitals.

As a wealthy country, we should use our resources to tackle this injustice. I therefore have two specific asks:

  1. Please write to Dominic Raab MP and ask him to bring this issue to the attention of governments world-wide and to support them to make this safe and effective treatment available to all women who need it.

  2. Please write to the Prime Minister and ask him to raise this issue as a matter of global justice at the United Nations.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,

RAISE AWARENESS

Why hasn’t there been an outrage about this issue at some point over the last 60 years? But every day that passes thousands of women die in this terrifying way. It’s up to all of us to raise awareness and make a difference. Share this site on social media. Share the resources from our media page. Tell everyone you know. There is the huge barrier of lack of awareness in our path - we need as many people as possible to push it out of the way.
